PORTAGE, MI - Speed dating for young people is well-known, but for seniors? Sure, why not, say organizers of the Portage Senior Center speed-dating events July 17, 24 and Aug. 1 at Jac's Restaurant.
Seniors looking for friendship, companionship and maybe love in all the old places often find themselves without time or patience for the been-there-done-that dating scene.
'So many of our members find themselves in this boat,' said Kim Phillips, manager at the Portage Senior Center. 'So we decided to try something new: speed dating for older adults.'
Speed dating has been around since the late 1980s. It typically takes the form of an organized event where a group of men and women rotate between tables and meet each other over a series of three- to eight-minute 'dates' during which they converse, ask questions and learn about each other.

At the end of each interval, the organizer signals the participants to move on to the next date.
Participants complete confidential rating sheets for each date, saying who they like and, most importantly, who may receive their contact information. At the end of the event, the organizers collect the score sheets, look for mutual likes and when there's a match, forward contact information to both parties.
'We've been putting out the word for a few weeks now, and we have lots of ladies signed up,' Phillips said. 'But we definitely are looking for more men to participate.'
There's a waiting list for women who have signed up. Phillips said, but definitely more men are needed to register. Response to the event has been so good that there may be more dates added if they can attract more guys to sign up.
The evening includes hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages, provided by Jac's.
The cost is $10 a person. This event is open to the public. Space is limited, so advance registration is required. Sign up at the Portage Senior Center, 320 Library Lane, or call 329-4555.
